MATH

OHTS added English and Math instructors to offer our students even more opportunities through the tech school. Working with our the Maine Community College System, we have identified college courses which are early requirements for the programs and majors which many of our students seek after high school. These Concurrent Enrollment courses are offered here at Oxford Hills and can be taken by any students from our 11 towns, even if those students are not enrolled in tech programs. These courses count as both high school credit and college credit. Because students in the State of Maine are allowed to take up to 12 free college credits, per year, while in high school, this is a great opportunity! The English classes offered follow:

CMCC MAT 104 Technical Math

This concurrent enrollment course is required for many majors in the Maine Community College System.  This course focuses on mathematics topics relevant to a variety of trades and technical disciplines. Topics include: proportions, percentages, measurement, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. An emphasis is placed on practical, contextual applications.  (NCAA approved course)

 CMMC MAT 135 Statistics

This concurrent enrollment course studies methods of collecting, organizing, summarizing, and presenting data, providing students the opportunity to develop skills using statistical techniques.  Topics of study also include sampling methods, descriptive statistics, probability and probability distributions, normal distributions, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, inferential statistics, regression, and correlation.  Technology will be employed as appropriate. (NCAA approved course)

CMCC MAT 115 Quantitative Reasoning

Quantitative Reasoning provides a foundation in critical thinking, problem solving, and mathematical and statistical skills aligned with citizenship, workforce and real-world applications. The goals of the course are to engage students in meaningful mathematical experiences that will increase their quantitative and logical reasoning abilities and strengthen the mathematical abilities that they will encounter in other disciplines. A focus of the course is to develop and support communication and collaboration skills. This dual enrollment course is designed as a gateway course for students entering non-STEM degree programs. (NCAA approved course)

CMCC MAT 101 Business Math

This concurrent enrollment course is required for many business related majors in the Maine Community College System.  This course is designed to develop the computational and vocabulary skills necessary for: retailing, marketing, accounting, finance and business management. Topics studied include: interest, banking, depreciation systems, payroll, statistics and graphics. It includes expanded application of algebraic principles through the study of quadratics and linear equations to business problems including standard of deviation and coefficient of variation to quality control problems. (NCAA approved course)

Math Support

This service is designed for students in technical programs who may require support in understanding the academic math related materials in their tech programs or who are struggling in their academic classes and could use additional math support. This support is not a service provided through an IEP for students requiring special instruction in mathematics.
